Data Collection

For the second year we are offering data collection sessions for groups from KS2 and above. There are 3 different sessions complementing the main topic areas. All equipment is provided.

1) Beach Profiles and Sediment Distribution at Lulworth Cove.

Working in small groups, students will take measurements using ranging poles, clinometers, tape measures and rulers and keep accurate records of the results they find. The session begins with an introductory talk and follows with a discussion on their findings and methods.

NB This session is dependent on tide times.

2) Footpath Erosion Investigations

  •  Measuring Footpath Erosion

This investigation is carried out from a tourism and management perspective, looking at how visitor pressure can have detrimental effects to the landscape. Working in small groups students will look at 2 different paths, one well used and one less popular. They will measure the extent of erosion on each by recording widths and depths and observing signs of erosion.

  •  Damage to Flora on Footpaths

Students will study how flora is affected by trampling on footpaths, and how some plants are adapted to survive better than others in these conditions. Using quadrats, tape meas

ures and id sheets they will investigate the diversity of plant species on and off the path and the abundance of certain species such as plantains and daisies.
