Lulworth Cove

A natural horse-shoe shaped harbour created 10,000 years ago

Lulworth Cove was formed approximately 10,000 years ago by the awesome powers of a river and the sea. It continues to evolve behind a narrow Portland Stone entrance as the softer Purbeck, Wealden, Greensand and Chalk exposures are eroded.

Lulworth Cove is a pebble beach and by virtue of its natural protection is very sheltered.

The steps at the East end of the beach lead to Fossil Forest and Mupe Bay with a stunning walk along the cliff top. The footpath is within the MoD Restricted Area and is only open at weekends and for the whole of August. Please check the information page as some weekends it is closed for firing.

There is a café on the beach serving ice creams, light meals and refreshments and there are toilet facilities nearby. In summer, a motor boat service from the beach will take you on a trip to Durdle Door or Mupe Bay by sea, where you will have the best possible view of this spectacular coastline.

How to get there: Parking is at the main pay and display Lulworth Cove Car Park. Lulworth Cove is approx. 200 metres from the main car park down a gently sloping road. Toilets are 30 metres from the beach.
